How do I learn Vipassana?
New students learn Vipassana by taking an intensive, residential ten-day course. Instructions are provided by S.N. Goenka on video and audio tapes. One or more assistant teachers will also be present to provide guidance and answer any questions about the technique.
As there is often a waiting list, applying one or two months in advance is recommended. After reviewing information about the program, course requirements, and the code of discipline, you can check our course schedule to see which dates are available and register for a course either online, by fax, or by mail. To request an application packet by mail, please contact the center (see below).
How much does a course cost?
According to the tradition of pure Vipassana, courses are run solely on a donation basis. Donations are accepted only from those who have completed at least one ten-day course with S.N. Goenka or one of his assistant teachers. Someone taking the course for the first time may give a donation on the last day of the course or any time thereafter. Students may give whatever amount matches their ability to give and their desire to provide others with the opportunity to learn the technique.
Are there courses shorter than ten days?
New students must attend a ten-day course to learn the technique. One-day and three-day refresher courses are offered for those who have already completed a ten-day course.
How many students attend each course?
The meditation hall has a capacity of 80 students. However, our residences can only accommodate up to 34 men and 34 women. A new female residence, which is currently under construction, will bring the number of beds for women to 46. Most courses have 55-65 participants.
What are the accommodations like?
The men's residence building, completed in December 2008, consists of double rooms, each with an attached bath. Women are accommodated in dorms with up to 10 students in the largest dorm room. Accommodations are simple, but adequate and comfortable. The new female residence, which is currently under construction, will have double-occupancy and semi-private rooms with attached baths.
What kind of food is served?
Our menu is completely vegetarian. Special diets due to medical conditions, allergies, etc. can be accommodated with advance notice.
